MASTER GARY MUSIC NAMED AWA
DIRECTOR OF SHURITE KEMPO
Shurite Kempo is a
highly effective striking art from Okinawa. The primary doctrine of
Shurite Kempo is
technique based and focuses on protecting oneself from an aggressive
unexpected attack.
Shurite Kempo is based in the deeper aspects of kata particularly the
Naihanchi series of kata. In training in Shurite
Kempo one learns nerve and lymph striking, joint/nerve manipulation and
more. We are lucky to have this true veteran of Shurite Kempo and top
disciple of Mr. Hart as our
director.

SUMMER CAMP OFFERS GREAT TRAINING
OPPORTUNITIES
tSUMMER
GASSHUKU RECAP
The summer gasshuku was a great
opportunity for both novice and master alike to train with some of the
worlds most revered traditional instructors. It was hot and most
training took place in the blazing sun, but all walked away with tons of
knowledge and a better feel for what real martial arts training is all
about. Pictured above from left to right are the following: Shihan
Abbott instructing use of bokken(pic on the left) , Four of our camp staff stopping long
enough to pose by the AWA banner: Gary Music, K. Huunjin Cullen,
Devorah Yoshiko Dometrich and Dana Abbott (pic 2nd from the left). Next photo is of Soke Huunjin
teaching a seminar on Kururunfa to a group of students on the "plateau"(Pic
3nd from the right).
The plateau offered us the chance to train in the grass, high above the
road below. much like they often did in the old Bruce Lee /Chuck Norris
films. It was an inspiration to all. Finally the picture to the far
right is of Sensei Dometrich, teaching a well attended and in depth
seminar on Sai.(Pic far right)
FOR ALL OF YOU WHO MISSED THIS CAMP I
NEED SAY ONLY THIS:
This has been the best camp yet. In fact,
most of the seasoned camp staff spent personal ONE ON ONE time with many
students campers addressing their questions on an individual basis
throughout the run of the camp. These opportunities don't happen
often and we were blessed we could get that kind of one on one
attention. Big thanks to the camp teaching staff!
In other words....
IF YOU MISSED THIS CAMP.. YOU TRULY
MISSED OUT ON A ONCE IN A LIFETIME CHANCE TO EXPLORE THE MINDS OF THESE
MOST AWESOME INSTRUCTORS.
NEXT YEARS CAMP DATES WILL BE POSTED
SOON. BOOK EARLY SO YOU CAN ENJOY THE BEST IN MARTIAL ARTS TRAINING.
All of us at AWA would like to thank our
camp staff and support staff for working so hard to make this a one of a
kind training environment. THANK YOU!

IN MEMORIUM :BOARD MEMBERS WHO HAVE PAST
STAN
HART

STAN HART, PICTURED ABOVE AND ABOVE LEFT, WAS A FREQUENT
INSTRUCTOR AT THE AWA SUMMER CAMP, HAD A GREAT SENSE OF HUMOR AND
TRAINED DILIGENTLY FOR 40 YEARS. HE WAS THE BIGGEST BEATLE FAN I HAVE
EVER KNOWN AND AS A MUSICIAN IN HIS EARLY YEARS , HE PLAYED GUITAR FOR
THE OHIO EXPRESS. STAN HAS ALWAYS BEEN A RESPECTED MARTIAL ARTIST WHO
CARRIED A HUMBLENESS ABOUT HIM. STAN AND I USED TO DO SEMINARS IN CANADA
TOGETHER AND HE ALWAYS LEFT THE CROWD WITH MORE KNOWLEDGE THAN THEY
COULD USUALLY RETAIN. HE ALSO ALWAYS LEFT THEM WITH PAINFUL
REMINDERS THAT GOOD STRIKING TECHNIQUES ARE THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON
GIVING!
STAN WAS ALSO A GREAT PHOTOGRAPHER, WORKING IN
BLACK AND WHITE, NOIR STYLE PHOTOS. HIS KEEN EYE AND ATTENTION TO DETAIL
MADE HIS WORKS APPEAR AS IF ANSEL HIMSELF WAS PULLING THE TRIGGER.
I WILL MISS STAN HART TERRIBLY. WE WERE FRIENDS
FOR DECADES AND THE CRATER THAT NOW LIES IN MY SOUL WILL NOT SOON BE
FILLED.
THINKING WARRIOR THOUGHTS MY DEAR FRIEND,
SOKE KEVIN HUUNJIN CULLEN
The viewing was Wednesday
September 12th from 6-8pm , funeral service were Thursday Sept. 13th @
11am at Munz Pirnstill Funeral Home, 215 N. Walnut in Bucyrus, OH.
STAN'S OBITUARY IS LISTED BELOW:
MANSFIELD -- Stan L. Hart, 59, formerly of Bucyrus and most recently of
Mansfield, died unexpectedly Saturday at
MedCentral/Mansfield Hospital.
Stan was born April 24, 1948, in Bucyrus to the
late Marvel E. and Ernestine L. (Furniss) Hart, who survives in Bucyrus.
He was previously married to Gloria (Buckley) Benschoter.
In addition to his mother, Stan is survived by
daughter Christie (Andy) Hoy of Gibsonburg; grandchildren Emily, Kameill
and Stevie; brother Randy (Renee) Hart of Sandusky; sister Rhonda
(Steve) Miller of Chatfield; nieces, nephews and numerous aunts and
uncles.
Stan began learning martial arts in high school
and continued this as an occupation for the past 40 years. He graduated
from Bucyrus High School in 1967 and moved from Bucyrus in 1985. Sensei
Hart was a noted martial artist, published in many leading MA
publications. He was an instructor's instructor; he taught owners of
leading martial arts schools all over the northeast U.S., but mainly in
New York and Ohio.
Stan was the instructor and an employee of Ohio
State University, Mansfield, teaching an accredited self-defense and
karate course. He was also the chief instructor at Marion YMCA and
Family Martial Arts Center in Mansfield. Sensei Hart began training in
karate in 1964. Sensei Hart was still very active in martial arts and
attained the master rank of 8th Dan Black Belt in Okinawan and Japanese
Karate. Sensei Hart was the chief instructor for the Shurite Kempo
Association and the Hakuda Technique Society.
Sensei Hart will be remembered and missed by
thousands of karate students and instructors in Ohio and New York. But
he will be remembered mostly for his skill in old karate, and also
founding many of the local YMCA and other karate programs in north
central Ohio.
Mr. Hart was an avid photographer and most
recently became a professional, doing such things as senior pictures.
MARTIAL ARTS PIONEER
DR. ROBERT RAPUE

Dr. Robert Rapue was a dear
friend and living legend in the martial arts. He was instrumental in the
furthering of Kajukenbo and was the developer of the A.m.i.d system of
defense. He will be missed by the over 40 thousand students he was
willing to train over the span of his lifetime and will be remembered by
all of those who were lucky enough to meet him.
